House of Tides

One Michelin star

Kenny and Abbie Atkinson’s House of Tides is set in a beautifully restored Grade I-listed 16th century former merchant’s town house on Newcastle’s historic Quayside, and serves thoughtful, precise and elegant tasting menus with an emphasis on natural, seasonal and sustainable produce.

Pine

One Michelin star and Michelin Green star

The tight-knit team here have this year retained both their Michelin star and their Michelin Green star in recognition of their sustainable practices. Dining here is something truly special, with exquisite cooking which makes the most of the local produce (much of it home grown or foraged) which fills the extensive tasting menu. It’s worth ordering one of their intelligent wine pairings.

Hjem

One Michelin star

Having once again retained its well-deserved Michelin star, Hjem is still near the top of the list for many North East foodies (as well as those from further afield). In the heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country, their exquisite tasting menu – with a touch of Scandinavian flair – is a unique offering. The intimate restaurant with its open kitchen offers a Nordic-influenced tasting menu of small bites and larger dishes, all created from ingredients sourced from the surrounding farms and gardens of Northumberland.

Solstice by Kenny Atkinson

One Michelin star

Just a stone’s throw from the Tyne Bridge, Solstice is the newest fine-dining restaurant from Kenny Atkinson. The dishes on the 15–18 course tasting menu emphasise simplicity, seasonality and sustainable practices, and Solstice offers an intimate dining experience.

Forge

Michelin Green star

On the Middleton Lodge Estate, Forge has been awarded a Michelin Green star for its outstanding commitment to ethical and environmental standards. Head chef Jake Jones, who was raised in York, also won Michelin’s Young Chef of the Year. His tasting menus are influenced by seasonal produce from the 200-acre landscape and the two-acre kitchen garden. Jake’s commitment to sustainability and innovation is evident in every dish, with produce sourced either on-site or through strong relationships with local suppliers who share an eco-conscious ethos. We spoke to Jake last year and you can check out the interview here.

Mýse

One Michelin star

Newly awarded a Michelin star for 2024, Mýse is a restaurant with rooms from chef and sommelier team Joshua and Victoria Overington, set in the pretty village of Hovingham. Named after the Anglo-Saxon word for ‘eating at the table’, ‘time and place’ shape the menus, with the ingredients and flavours available on each individual day dictating the produce-driven style of cooking. The team have created a unique offering in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

The Star Inn Harome

One Michelin star

This characterful, 14th century thatched inn offers a Michelin-star dining experience with bags of charm and atmosphere. Chef patron Andrew Pern has been at The Star for 26 years and is a legend on the Yorkshire food scene, creating seasonal a la carte menus to tempt the tastebuds alongside chef director Stephen Smith.

The Black Swan Oldstead

One Michelin star and Michelin Green star

Brimming with creativity and innovation, Tommy Banks puts his very talented twist on the dynamic tasting menu here. After becoming Britain’s youngest Michelin-starred chef in 2013, Tommy has gone on to secure award after award for The Black Swan – and you can’t argue with the menu, which promises an unforgettable dining experience where you can expect everything from smoked eel to hogget with mint and turnip, all inspired by what is grown and foraged around Oldstead.

Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall

One Michelin star

Shaun Rankin honed his culinary skills in London and Jersey before returning home to open this formal fine-dining experience at the luxurious Grantley Hall. Taking advantage of the herbs and vegetables grown in their very own kitchen garden, and using only the very best hand-picked suppliers, the Michelin-star restaurant offers slick dining with a difference.

The Angel at Hetton

One Michelin star

Expect the unconventional at The Angel at Hetton. Chef patron Michael Wignall and his wife Johanna took over in 2018, and were eager to hold onto the strong connection with the Yorkshire landscape that the restaurant had become renowned for. But Michael’s style offers a dining experience far from what you may have experienced before, as he serves up dishes that are casual and contemporary, with a less formal approach to dining.

Pipe & Glass

One Michelin star

The multi-award winning, Michelin-starred Pipe & Glass is a former coaching inn set on the stunning Dalton Estate. Whilst its restaurant is renowned, the Pipe and Glass is also a friendly pub where you can grab a sandwich and a beer (walk-ins are welcome in the bar for both drinks and dining). James and Kate Mackenzie run the show, with James heading the kitchen and Kate keeping you comfortable front of house. It’s all about garden-to-plate here, and much of the produce used in the kitchen comes from their own gardens (which are also a great place to enjoy food al fresco).

Roots York

One Michelin star

This is the city outpost of Tommy Banks’ empire, so we’d expect nothing less than the outstanding quality on offer at Roots. The focus here is on using high-end ingredients to create modern and innovative dishes which still include a nod to their traditional Yorkshire roots. Offering a relaxed take on fine dining, Roots is a slice of calm in the heart of the York.
