This is the Perfect Base For a City Break in York

Railway House York is the perfect base from which to explore the city
Within easy reach of the train station but with its own convenient gated parking area, Railway House York was originally built for the head of the rail network in 1850. This beautiful Georgian property has since been restored into a characterful self-catering sanctuary which tempts us back time and time again. Just off Holgate Road, the pretty private gardens promise an opportunity for dining al fresco.
This renovation project from the team at Chateau Anna has transformed each apartment with colour palettes courtesy of Little Greene paint and welcome luxuries such as a free-standing tubs, copper baths and sumptuous sofas to sink into. But this property certainly hasn’t lost its charm with its high ceilings, original features and wooden shutters. Subtle, and in some cases not so subtle, nods to the property’s railway heritage are weaved throughout, so where better to stay during the 200th anniversary of the birth of the modern railway? Or indeed at any other time.

Railway House York boasts eight uniquely-designed apartments with a country house style – some perfect for groups and others the ideal staycation for two – and our group is scattered across them. All come complete with Nespresso machines and luxury Bath House toiletries.
The stylish bedrooms means there’s plenty of space to relax while the spacious communal areas allow some of us to spend time together, catching up over food and drinks in the evenings. Given how close we are to the city, including York Minster and the Shambles, we do take our chance to head out too – dining at the city’s popular Tomahawk outpost one evening, and The Old Liquor Store (in the old Terry's chocolate factory) the next.
Helston Street, York’s dried flowers and interiors shop, is a must-visit not least because the owner, Lucy, is a part of the Chateau Anna team, and designed all the interiors for Railway House York. Bishopthorpe Road is another hotspot within easy reach – Robinsons is a popular café for breakfasts, 2 Many Wines has its own tasting room, and go to Angel On The Green for fresh pizza. Head into the city centre and the House of Trembling Madness has a huge selection of beers, 22 Yards Wine promises views of the Minster, and the choice of restaurants is endless, from Fish & Forest to Roots and Skosh. Our highlight though, is how close Railway House York is to York Racecourse, where we’ll return with our Christmas Fair from 20th–23rd November.
