Here are some of our region's best roasters and blenders

Chuck the Typhoo and Kenco in the bin and get to know some of the brilliant artisan roasters and blenders in the region.

Caffé Ginevra

For almost 100 years the Ginevras have been roasting coffee in the Sicilian city of Caltanissetta. Their blends are full on flavour and low in bitterness, with most available as either ground coffee or coffee beans. You can buy online, or in their lovely little espresso bar, where you can try before you by – with a slice of cake or two.

Luckie Beans

They certainly are lucky beans which get the privilege of being roasted here, though arguably us coffee drinkers are luckier still – not least because we don't have to be ground into powder when push comes to shove. Single-origin roasts from Africa and South America are their speciality, though the house blend is mighty fine too.

Northern Edge Coffee

All of the coffee blends produced by Northern Edge Coffee are named after legends, myths and facts about Berwick, and it’s all produced from ethically-sourced beans roasted in small batches. That it’s all delicious kind of goes without saying.

Pilgrims Coffee

Dodge the tides and head to Holy Island for a dose of history and a bag or two of exceptional coffee, roasted in a yurt by the coffee fanatics here. They describe their blends as ‘super awesome’, which is a bit early-90s surfer dudeish for us, but we don’t dispute it.

Pumphrey’s Coffee

Established in 1750, Pumphrey’s source the finest coffee beans from around the world and roast them to order using traditional, open-flame roasting drums that are more than 80 years old. They also supply an extensive range of loose leaf teas, and you can create your own blends at Mrs Pumphrey’s Curious LeavesTea Shoppe in Grainger Market.

This now-iconic company began in 1907, with founder Samuel Smith selling tea from a horse and cart on the streets of Newcastle. More than a century later, they still deliver their responsibly-sourced tea to over 260,000 customers across the UK – and you can also buy their tea and tea-related goods online.

Algernon Road, Newcastle NE6 2YN

Rounton

A century ago, the Rounton building was a granary, but now it’s been refunked into an urbane, shabby-chic base for their roastery, which turns out Kenyan, Ethiopean, Columbian and El Salvadorian single-origin roasts as well as blends like the chocolatey, hazelnut-accented Granary Blend.
