What's on
August 2022
Reading time 4 Minutes

From beach days to a street food feast, or even jet simulations and a shopping trip, we’ve picked out lots of fun ways you can spend your time this weekend

Here’s what we suggest!
RAF Red Arrows RAF Red Arrows

Be beside the sea…

As we settle into August hopefully the weather starts playing ball, meaning this weekend is the ideal time to get down to the beach. Head to livingnorth.com and you’ll find the ultimate guide to the North East and Yorkshire coast, where you’ll find all the details you could need to plan a perfect day at the seaside. Don’t like building sandcastles? You’ll also find a list of beautiful beach walks with perfect pub stops, so don’t say we don’t make it easy for you to have a great weekend!

Spread your wings…

The RAF Red Arrows flyby is a fixture in the Tyneside calendar as they historically celebrate the iconic Great North Run held every year. This weekend, it’s your turn to see how it feels to fly in these amazing aircraft. Experience the thrill of the cockpit and fly with the RAF’s Red Arrows as they jet over their Cyprus training base in Discovery Museum’s new flight simulator. Step inside the state-of-the-art capsule for an immersive ride with high-definition visuals, surround sound and dynamic motion.

Find fun and fabulous folklore…

This weekend, head to Hazlewood Castle to see a play like no other. Legends of the Castle is a musical theatre performance that features wild stories of non-fiction characters as told by a band of four medieval-style strolling actors, who act out folklore fables from long ago. Suitable for children of all ages, expect catchy songs, plenty of audience participation and a whole lot of fun. Plus, the stage is just as unique as the show, with the performance taking place in the castle’s beautiful woodland amphitheatre.

Best day on record…

Friday is National Vinyl Day and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by visiting Leeds Record Fair on Saturday. With more than 80 tables of quality vinyl records of all genres, you’ll spend hours searching through all the stalls and as it’s the fair’s fifth birthday, there'll be lots of rare and collectable records and bargains to celebrate. If you’re a local musician, why not go one step further than just buying a record and head to Press-on Vinyl in Teesside? This brand new pressing plant is geared towards grassroots music, aiming to support independent artists and labels in the North East, and you can organise to get a short run of your work pressed.

Get feasting…

Belgrave Feast is back in Leeds this Saturday, showcasing three floors of food from the North’s finest indie street food vendors, art, ales and music. This month the line-up includes favourites such as Luigi Street Food, Oh My Thai, Patty Smith’s Burgers and Sugar Blonde Bakes. Plus you can make a family day of it as there are kids arts, crafts and soft play available throughout the day, as well as Dough Boys Pizza running a little chefs pizza-making class at 11am.

Keep on running…

This weekend, head to Jesmond’s Brentwood Avenue to be one of the first to shop at activewear brand Sweaty Betty’s newest shop. Opened just yesterday (10th August), this the first of the global brand’s stores in the North East and the shop will showcase Sweaty Betty’s famous leggings and performance pieces in categories such as Run, Yoga, and Train. Alternatively head to local brand Yana Active’s popular pop-up in Fenwick, where you’ll also find a brand new Lulu Lemon concession – there’s never been a better time to refresh your fitness wear.

Catch up and have a laugh…

Comedian Kevin Bridges is bringing his latest stand-up show to Hull’s Bonus Arena this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Three years after his last tour, the Scottish comedian is returning with his hotly-anticipated new show ‘The Overdue Catch-Up’.

Snack on a sandwich…

August is national sandwich month so why not challenge yourself to trying a different sandwich each day this weekend? Whether you’re tempted by a coronation chicken  or Craster kipper club sandwich, or want to try something a bit different such as peanut butter and jam cookie sandwiches, just head to livingnorth.com where we’ve got so many delicious combinations for you to try.
